Urs Giger, Prof. Dr. med. vet., MS, FVM, is a professor of the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Dipl. ACVIM (American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine), Dipl. ECVIM-CA (European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine – Companion Animals), Dipl. ECVP (European College of Veterinary Pathologists), Director of Pen Gen Laboratory.

Urs Giger received his veterinary degree from the University of Zürich, Switzerland, where he also pursued his thesis on the surgical repair of hip dysplasia, initial clinical training in small animal medicine and surgery and research postgraduate work. He has a secondary professorship in small animal internal medicine at the University of Zürich as well as professor of hematology at the Medical School University of Pennsylvania. He is also chairing the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) Hereditary Disease Committee. His clinical and research expertise and interests are in hereditary and hematologic disorders of small animals and in transfusion therapy. Prof. Giger is the author of more than 200 original research publications, numerous references, chapters, abstracts, editor of “The Dog And It`s Genome” book published by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press. Among other awards, he was the recipient of the 2002 WSAVA International Scientific Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2007 International Bourgelat Award from the BSAVA and is a frequently invited speaker at many national and international conferences.
